Answering Parents’ Top Questions About Massage for Children
Lately I’ve noticed an uptick in the number of children coming to my practice for massage. Most of the time, their parents, clients already — so are familiar with me and my practice. In these cases, I usually have an opportunity to talk to the parent about their child’s needs and answer any questions. But sometimes I get calls from parents who aren’t familiar with massage or my practice. Here’s how I answer their most common questions:
What’s the minimum age for massage?
Massage is beneficial for people of all ages, including babies! In the state of Kentucky, there is no law that specifies a minimum age for massage. And, while my company logo says “ages 9 to 99,” I do not have a minimum age. I will (and have) provided massage therapy to patients of any age. My only requirement is that the parent is present anytime I work with someone under 18.
How do children benefit from massage?
Massage can benefit them in the same way it benefits adults. Most of the children and teens who come to my practice are looking for these health benefits:
- Relieving stress and anxiety
- Helping with sleep problems
- Reducing headaches
- Relieving soreness related to athletic activities or injuries
Some of the kids who come to my practice don’t have a specific health concern. Their parents simply want to teach them that massage is a form of self-care.
Does my child need to undress for a massage?
No. I prefer for children to stay clothed during a massage.
Are massage techniques different for children?
Techniques for babies and infants are different. However, as children get older, the technique is pretty much the same as it is for adults. Just like with adult clients, I talk to my pediatric clients before the massage to understand any issues they’re dealing with and to determine which techniques would work best.
