And the answer is…………..there is no response that fits everyone nor that fits each individual all the time. Not a nice neat script that we sometimes like to have, but our lives and situations are constantly changing and therefore so are the needs of our bodies and minds. Generally speaking, a massage once or twice a month is a good reference point to decide what works best for you. I believe in prevention and maintenance. “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it” is not a motto I apply to my own healthcare and not one that I would suggest to others.
There are some things to consider when deciding for yourself how often you should come for a massage:
WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR LIFE PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY
If you are having higher levels of stress and anxiety, you may want to come more often. If you have upped the physical demands on your body you will want to get a massage sooner than what you usually do.
HOW DO YOU WANT TO FEEL IN YOUR BODY
Some people are willing to tolerate more pain and discomfort than others. We are all different in what we find acceptable.
How does massage make you feel? Even though I rarely have anything going on with my body, I crave massage much more than my husband does.
How long after the massage do you feel better? A week, a month?
HOW MUCH TIME AND MONEY ARE YOU WILLING TO INVEST IN YOUR HEALTH
Years ago, I remember looking at my budget and noticed that I spent way more in the “entertainment” category than I did for “health and wellness”. I quickly switched those priorities around. I don’t want to imply that what I did was right and someone else is wrong if they don’t see it the same way though.
Obviously, time and money is a real constraint for some people. Don’t feel like any effort you make is not enough though. Just do the best you can and feel good about that. Guilt and negativity just causes more stress, which is harmful to your entire self. Focus on what you CAN do.
There is not one “prescription” that works for all people, all the time. I would suggest scheduling at least one session per month and then pay attention to your body, mind and circumstances. Sometimes you will want to come in more frequently, sometimes you can wait a little longer. Sometimes you will want a longer session, sometimes you will be fine with a shorter session. Experiment. See what works for YOU!
