Taking care of yourself, unfortunately, is not something of high value in much of our culture. But you know it’s worth, so why not gain even more benefit from your dedication to self? I have 3 tips that can help you feel better between your massage appointments.
1. DRINK WATER- You should drink half your body weight in ounces each day, not just following a massage. Water hydrates your muscles, which makes them function better and hurt less.
It can be difficult to keep track so something that may help is to keep a water container with you all day. Measure out how much liquid it holds so that you know how many times you need to fill up that day. Each time you fill up, put a rubber band around your container so that you can track the amount you are drinking.
2. PUMP DOWN THE VOLUME-If you must get into your car and drive after a massage, avoid loud, upbeat music in favor of relaxing tunes. Skip the news too. Stories that frustrate you can raise your blood pressure which you just had lowered.
Go ahead and turn that dial to calm tunes before you even go into to get your massage. That way it will already be set when you get in your car afterwards.
3. DON’T SIT TOO LONG- Your body is made to move, not to sit still. If you have a sedentary job or just enjoy watching TV all evening, find a way to incorporate movement.
Take your neck, arms and legs through their full range of motion.
NECK:
Look up, down to the right and left.
Slowly roll your head in circles.
SHOULDERS:
Roll them forward and backward.
Move your arms in full circles.
HIPS:
Stand and move your hips in full circles-clockwise and counter-clockwise.
Put your hands at your lower back and lean back and then to each side.
LEGS:
While sitting, stretch your legs out as far as you can in front of you.
Point your toes and then bring them back toward you.
Make circles in each direction with your ankles.
It is easy to get focused on your work and forget to stop and move. So set a timer every 60 minutes to remind yourself to take a break and move. Take two minutes to perform these movements every hour. Your body will feel so much better at the end of the day.
Until they become routine, making changes can be difficult to implement. Quite simply, because you forget. Give yourself a daily reminder to do the things that are important to you by putting a post it note on your bathroom mirror or computer monitor where you will be sure to see it.
If you’re experiencing pain or if it’s been more than two weeks since you’ve had a massage, click here to schedule one today. Regular massage is good healthcare. It makes you feel better in your body.
